Residency Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

The Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program is fully accredited by ACGME and is two years in length. In keeping with the philosophy of the department, the goal of the program is to provide residents with excellent clinical, educational, and research experiences. Achieving clinical competence occurs through well supervised inpatient and outpatient rotations, as well as in the variety of community settings in which a child and adolescent psychiatrist is likely to work, such as schools, pediatric units, and forensic and substance abuse programs. Our commitment to education is reflected in a didactic program that presents a resident with the scientific and clinical information he or she needs to master. There is an ongoing process to review the curriculum so that it remains relevant to the changing health care world that residents encounter. Didactics are presented every Wednesday during the academic year and take place at Wayne State University Tolan Park Medical Building adjacent to the Detroit Medical Center Central Campus. Residents are encouraged to develop their own particular areas of interest in their two years of study and tailor their training according to these interests. The first year of training is fairly uniform in that clinical competence in traditional settings is the goal. During the second year, residents learn consultation skills, continue longitudinally with outpatients, and may elect up to two months to develop additional expertise in a clinical or research area of interest. There is no overnight call requirement, and education is emphasized rather than clinical service. Applicants must have completed at least three years in an ACGME accredited residency in general psychiatry and be eligible for a permanent license in Michigan.
