Addiction Psychiatry
Program Overview
Our program offers a one-year fellowship program in Addiction Psychiatry fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). One ACGME accredited Addiction Psychiatry fellowship position is available, commencing on July 1st.
Board Certification in Addiction Psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) has the advantage of official recognition by organized medicine. Only Board-certified psychiatrists who have completed one year of ACGME-approved fellowship in addiction psychiatry can sit for the Subspecialty Certification Exam in Addiction Psychiatry.
Program Description
The Addiction Psychiatry fellowship sponsored by the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University utilizes the Detroit VA Healthcare System as its primary training site and provides fellows with advanced training in the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of addictive disorders. A well-rounded and comprehensive series of didactic presentations as well as clinical rotations ensure that graduates are clinically competent and knowledgeable in all aspects of addiction treatment.
Our program offers a comprehensive clinical experience in screening, diagnosis, psychopharmacology, consultation-liaison, and crisis intervention with both inpatient and outpatient populations. It is grounded in closely supervised clinical rotations, encompassing the full spectrum from screening and diagnosis to chronic treatment for a broad range of patients, including those with major psychiatric and medical co-morbidities.
Program Leadership
Fellowship Program Director Agnes Wrobel, M.D., has many years of experience in academic and clinical addiction psychiatry. She is a member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry as well as the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. Dr. Wrobel has been involved in numerous activities and committees related to medical student, resident, and fellow training in addiction psychiatry.
Faculty
Each clinical rotation is supervised by a faculty mentor, who provides on-site supervision.
Fellows are encouraged to pursue research interests, for which a wide variety of mentors are accessible under the leadership of Mark Greenwald, Ph.D., Director of the Wayne State University, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, Substance Abuse Research Division. The fellowship enjoys a large multidisciplinary faculty including faculty members from the Departments of Pharmacology, Psychology, Internal Medicine, Community Medicine, Social Work and Psychiatry.
