Therapy Research and Training

The Therapy Research and Training Division (TRTD) has been established to conduct empirically based research on psychotherapy treatment and determinants of psychopathology. This research division, based at UPC Jefferson and UPC Farmington Hills, is affiliated with the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and the WSU Psychology Department. The TRTD provides psychotherapy treatment supervision and training covering a broad range of techniques, including cognitive-behavioral, motivational enhancement, psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, and short-term focus treatment using diverse approaches.

New approaches to understanding etiology and treatment include attachment theory from research in developmental psychology. An additional emphasis is on research on the prevention and treatment of alcohol use and comorbid disorders in high risk, inner city pregnant women, children and adolescents.

Current research foci include the role of mental representational models; patient-therapist working alliance; cross-cultural differences; stress, trauma, and violence; and benefits of linking medication and varying therapies in understanding the etiology and treatment of psychopathology.
