Interns engage in approximately 40 hours of clinical and professional activities per week, accumulating no fewer than 2,000 hours of supervised experience. Experience Needed

Eligible applicants include students enrolled in a Ph.D. or Psy.D. Clinical Psychology Training Program accredited by either the American Psychological Association (APA) or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA). To be eligible for our internship program, an applicant must have completed all required doctoral course work, qualifying examinations, and required practicum placements (minimum of 350 direct and 1000 total hours). We strongly consider dissertation progress in our recruitment decisions, with weight given to significant progress on dissertation proposal, data recruitment, and program completion at the time of application, and we will expect that at minimum a dissertation proposal has been defended at the time of applicant/program ranking.

Application Process

All interested applicants will apply for our program through the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (www.appic.org). The WSU SOM Internship Program is in the process of becoming an Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) member and will participate in the APPIC national matching program. Upon membership, we will follow the APPIC notification date guidelines for matching with prospective interns. Applicants will be required to self-register with the APPIC program via the National Matching Services, Inc. (NMS) site to participate in the internship match. An electronic application should be submitted through the APPIC portal, and must include:

  • A cover letter that outlines the applicant’s experience and interests relevant to the internship program, as well as a discussion of the applicant’s learning goals and how those goals may be met based on the educational aims/mission of the internship program
  • A completed AAPI online application
  • An up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Three letters of recommendation from letter writers who can attest to the candidates’ clinical education and skills

APPIC Match Numbers: Coming soon

Applications will be reviewed by our Internship Applicant Selection Committee (IASC) which includes three to five psychologist faculty who also serve as clinical and/or research supervisors in the program. We will also include at least one current intern as a member of the IASC. This committee will be chaired by the Training Director.

Just following the application deadline, the IASC will review applications and make decisions about whom to invite for interview. Interviews will occur in early-mid December or early-mid January. Interviews may be in person, on video or by telephone depending on both program and applicant preference and resources. Each applicant will be interviewed individually by at least two (2) members of the IASC, as well as the Director of Training. Each interview will take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. For each interviewed applicant, the interviewing faculty will complete an interview evaluation form that will be distributed to the IASC for discussion and ranking. Ranking will be influenced strongly by the mutual fit between the internship goals/values and the learning interests and needs of the applicant.
