There is a particular and rather unique sense of family that this program fosters, and that support and mingling between the different classes sets us apart from many other programs in my mind. Our program director, Dr. Balon, as well as numerous other faculty members, are great advocates for the residents, and their interest in teaching and guiding the next generation of psychiatrists is clearly evident."

"For me psychiatry was a path, rather than a career. I have come to appreciate this over the past 4 years, and it has reinforced my passion as each year comes and goes. The Wayne program allowed me to develop professionally, and socially in a way that was consistent with my values and demeanor. I am particularly interested in forensic psychiatry, and the program has provided great research, clinical and networking opportunities. On a personal note, I enjoy outdoor activities, live music, tennis, athletics and new restaurants. I have been very happy living in Detroit the past 4 years, its thriving social scene provides tons of entertainment and a great balance to resident life."

"Looking back at my time at Wayne State, I really learned a lot in residency, especially during my third year when I had the most autonomy, as well as on-call. Dr. Balon is a relaxed humorous program director, which makes many of our didactics with him a joy. My class of residents were really close, and you could count on them, rain or shine. I believe the WSU/DMC Psychiatry Residency program is a great place to learn, and anyone who goes there will come out ready for real-world experiences in psychiatry."

The psychopathologies in various settings and the diverse patient population provided me a great learning experience. The psychotherapy and psychopharmacology supervision are huge strengths of the program. Rotations are very well-rounded and designed to help you learn more and more as you progress through the post-graduate years. Being on call at two different settings trains you well for all kinds of psychiatric emergencies. One of the best features of this program is that it is very cohesive and collaborative. Dr. Balon, our program director, is very approachable, friendly, open, and accessible. He becomes your mentor, guide, and advocate. My co-residents were my home away from home. They were always there for me as a family for physical, mental, and emotional support. The WSU/DMCProgram helped me train as an excellent psychiatrist and achieve my dream fellowship position. During my time there, I developed the most precious relationships with my mentors and colleagues, which I will continue to carry with me wherever I go."
