Application Process

Thank you for your interest in the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University (DMC/WSU) General Adult Psychiatry Residency Program! Please see below for more detailed application information.

  • All residency positions are filled through the National Residency Matching Program, and applications are submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service.
  • We offer interviews only to applicants whose USMLE STEP 1 with a Passing score and STEP 2 (CK) with an average score of 220 or COMLEX 1 & 2-CE scores average at least 450; multiple attempters are screened out.
  • Applicants must have been in medical school, residency, or active practice as a physician within 5 years of applying to the program.
  • IMG's may be offered spots under a J1 visa only (not H1).  U.S. healthcare experience, particularly in psychiatry, will be given preference.
  • Interviews are scheduled on Mondays and Fridays from October through January.
  • Our interviews are currently being held virtually via Zoom. Our program offers in-person tours for those candidates who were previously interviewed with our program, this is normally held during January and February.
  • The program filled all of its 10 PGY-1 positions in the 2024 match, and we have no advanced standing openings.
  • Applicants are encouraged to apply early because our interview slots fill quickly.  Application deadline is December 1st.
  • We do not offer observer ships due to privacy and liability issues.
