Clinicican-Educator Track
DMC/WSU Psychiatry Residency Clinician Educator Track
Background: As Wayne State University is the largest single campus medical school in the country, all residents are expected to be active in clinical teaching. Some residents may have a particular interest in medical education, and the Clinician Educator Track is dedicated to providing additional training and experience for those with an interest in an academic psychiatry career. Residents in good standing are eligible to apply to the track in the spring of the PGY-1 year. Up to 2 residents per year will be accepted, with the expectation of beginning the track at the beginning of the PYG-2 year.
Elements of the DMC/WSU Clinician Educator Track:
- Mentorship – regularly scheduled mentorship with an expert in UME and/or GME psychiatric education (see faculty list)
- Faculty Development – opportunities are available through SEMCME, WSU, and DMC-GME with protected time to participate in approved activities. Residents will be required to attend one webinar/month.
- Educational Leadership – residents will have standing membership in the Program Evaluation Committee, as well as other education focused committees that may convene (such as the Departmental Executive Education Committee). This may also include participation in the Departmental Faculty Retreat, if appropriate.
- Educational Project – residents will identify an area of focus in medical student or resident/fellow education. This could include revision or new development of a didactic series, rotation, clinical experience, or other educational component, with the expectation to publish and/or present on their work at a local or national meeting. Beginning in PGY-2, residents can utilize ½ day per week of elective time to develop their project. The project will be supervised by one of the track’s education experts/faculty.
- National Conference Participation – residents are eligible to receive additional leave and funding to attend and present on their work at a national conference such as AADPRT, ADMSEP, or the Association for Academic Psychiatry.
- Recruitment – residents are expected to participate in residency interviews and ranking.
- Residents will be expected to teach 1-2 resident didactic classes in collaboration with the faculty and spend one month teaching medical student clerkship didactics (with Dr. Getzen).
- Residents may also be given the opportunity to work with track faculty to review a manuscript for Academic Psychiatry or another journal.
